Looking Back on 2012 and Ahead to 2013!

Happy New Year!

2012 saw a lot of changes, as well as growth, for the First Day Shoe Fund. We’re looking forward to more of the latter in 2013 as we complete our expansion into the Comstock community including both elementary schools in the distribution for fall 2013.

2012 saw the retirement of Founder Valerie Denghel, without whom none of this would be possible. She worked tirelessly for 6 years to build a strong foundation for FDSF and to begin the work we hope to continue for a long time to come.

Throughout the summer and fall, Valerie worked with me, showing me the ropes (and the shoes), introducing me to our incredibly valuable partners (KPS, Community in Schools) and helping me establish new ones (Comstock Community Center). I had the opportunity to meet and begin work with our incredible board, committees, and volunteers. It’s been an exciting 6 months!

After a short break in December, we’re working on some great things for 2013 with plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. We look forward to seeing familiar faces and a few new ones as well. There just may be one coming up this month, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Remember volunteering is fun; it’s more fun with friends!

Looking forward to an amazing 2013 and helping even more students in the Kalamazoo area start school on equal footing!
